CAPS sends you warm wishes during these holidays and hopes you return in the new year refreshed and ready to continue the fight! With the recent rejection of the State’s LBFO, your participation in actions will be the main source of pressure on this Administration to finally showcase that they Value Scientists!

CAPS Supports Members via Hardship Fund. The CAPS Member Benefits Committee has been hard at work reviewing the applications submitted for the Strike Hardship Fund. The first round of awards will be released this week via mail. Thank you to all who applied.

The CAPS Board of Directors continues to solicit funds and grow this account to ensure that our membership has the resources to continue the fight! CAPS has had many contributions from CAPS members, other union members across the state and the nation, and from other supporters of science. Recently, United Auto Workers Region 6 pledged a large donation, and they have also featured standing in solidarity with CAPS in their newsletter: https://region6.uaw.org/region-6/blog/dec-newsletter-2023-review-new-organizing-more. Thank you to all who have contributed so far!

Help a Colleague in Need: Catastrophic Leave Donations. CDFW Sr. Environmental Scientist and CAPS Member Helen Thompson has requested catastrophic leave donations in order to continue receiving pay and benefits.  Section 3.10 of the CAPS MOU and CalHR Manual 2116 allow for the transfer of the following types of leave credits as catastrophic leave: CTO, Personal Leave, Annual Leave, Vacation, Personal Day, and/or Holiday Credit. If donating Personal Holidays, they must be donated in whole-day increments per the donating employee’s time base. All other donations must be made in a minimum of one hour (1.00) increments. Sick leave cannot be donated. If you can spare even ONE HOUR, it would greatly assist this member.  CAPS is grateful to all who can assist.  Download the donation form and get more details here.

Governor Authorizes Informal Time Off (ITO). Governor Newsom has continued the historic tradition of authorizing up to four (4) hours of Holiday ITO for all employees, based on time base. If you do not use your ITO during the holiday season, you may keep it until the end of the Fiscal Year (June 30, 2024). You can read more about Holiday ITO in the CalHR Manual here.
