With the recent affiliation with UAW, members of CAPS-UAW now have increased opportunities to participate in conferences and meetings like the opportunity below. We are looking for 20-30 CAPS-UAW members to attend as delegates at the 2024 UAW Region 6 Political Action Conference, August 17th and 18th at the UAW Region 6 Office in Pico Rivera, CA. Only dues-paying CAPS-UAW members are eligible to attend. If you’re not a dues paying CAPS-UAW member, join your union here!
We will prioritize members that are local to the Los Angeles area. If you’re interested in attending please fill out this interest form no later than July 14th. All interest received will be considered, regardless of your location.
Conference Topics will include:
- Building political power to advance our organizing goals during an election year and beyond
- Skill building
- Political education
- Collaborative strategic planning
- Determining political priorities for UAW Region 6 with other local unions
Why attend?
Political engagement gives workers the power to advocate for legislation that advances our interests and rights, as State Scientists, and as unions! By participating in political processes, union members have the opportunity to influence decisions and policy that directly impact the livelihood of you and your loved ones!
As members of UAW Region 6, State Scientists have the opportunity to play a role in the vital work that has been spearheaded by our fellow UAW siblings! In 2024 alone, UAW Region 6 members have:
- Supported the successful organizing of thousands of workers to form new unions (e.g., at USC, Caltech, WWU, and University of Alaska)
- Mobilized powerful strike actions to win strong contracts and protect free speech
- Built organizing and political plans to advance climate justice and a just transition to EVs
- Developed members’ skills and ownership over the union through multiple trainings through Our Labor, Our Movement
- Won key political fights around affordable housing and expanded sick leave, and more
As this work continues and grows, a key area for building leverage to win a just, sustainable future is through political action. Attending this conference will kickstart State Scientists involvement in supporting and building our political leverage, in solidarity with other UAW locals in Region 6, to advance our goals and fight back when politicians do not feel accountable to us.
Submit your interest form by July 14! A fellow CAPS-UAW member will reach out to confirm whether you have been selected to attend once all interest forms have been received. Travel and per diem will be covered by CAPS-UAW for delegates attending.
In this moment, we have a critical opportunity to build a renewed, fighting labor movement that can win a system that prioritizes the needs of working people. Together, we will leave better equipped to move a fighting, worker-driven political agenda – and win!
