With the Holiday Season here, it’s an excellent time to consider how CAPS bargained the holiday calendar that gives State Scientists these paid days off each year:
- January 1 – New Year’s Day
- The third Monday in January – Martin Luther King, Jr., Day
- The third Monday in February – President’s Day
- March 31 – César Chávez Day
- The last Monday in May – Memorial Day
- July 4 – Independence Day
- The first Monday in September – Labor Day
- November 11 – Memorial Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- The day after Thanksgiving
- December 25 – Christmas Day
- Floating – Personal Holiday
Many non-union, non-state employees receive as few as seven paid holidays annually. Over the years, CAPS successfully urged the State to expand the paid holidays State Scientists receive to spend with family and friends or just to decompress.
CAPS didn’t just bargain those benefits: We also ensure the State follows the rules for overtime pay, compensating time off, or holiday credit required in our Memorandum of Understanding if you have to work a holiday. If the State makes errors, members can reach out to CAPS to help straighten things out.
Our records indicate that you’re not yet a CAPS member. Please join us today. Strengthen our union, just as thousands of your colleagues have, because they understand how CAPS’ collective work impacts every aspect of their careers.
Dues are $59 per month. This online form takes less than three minutes to complete, but the benefits last a lifetime.
