CAPS/MANAGEMENT 2008 SALARY SURVEY RESULTS

The 2008 Benchmark Scientist Survey results are now available.  This joint CAPS/DPA survey is required by the CAPS Unit 10 MOU.  The overall results of the survey demonstrate state scientist salaries lag from 9% to nearly 42% compared to other public sector employers.  This salary disparity has caused a serious recruitment deficiency and retention problem among state scientists in many programs crucial to public health, safety and the environment.

CAPS and DPA agreed to survey seven classes to represent the bargaining unit for this year's survey.  The classes include: Environmental Scientist Range C, Chemist Range C, Associate Industrial Hygienist, Associate Health Physicist, Associate Geologist, and Research Scientist III and IV (Epidemiology/Biostatistics).  Private sector employers were not included only because DPA would not participate in the survey if they were.

The differential cited above is based upon a simple average.  The following graphs summarize the salary data collected.  This data will be used in several ways, such as, 1) contract negotiations, 2) HR Modernization, and 3) recruitment and retention differential negotiations.
